I am available to consult with you, in-person or online, on an hourly basis to help you work through the design dilemmas you're facing in your garden. Hourly consults like this are most appropriate when you need some direction and assistance on a general concept for your garden or when only a small area is being considered.
This more in-depth design process is a collaborative experience. It includes a thorough analysis of your site and an interview process designed to help uncover your needs, wants, and dreams for your garden space.
We start by developing a conceptual garden plan that focuses on the shape, function, and flow of your garden. The concept plan is greatly influenced by how you envision using your outdoor spaces and how involved you want to be with your garden in terms of maintenance and upkeep. Special emphasis is placed on creating strong connections between your indoor and outdoor spaces.
The concept plan if drawn at scale and typically shows the location of all major site elements such as patios, walkways and paths, decking, fencing, structures, and general planting areas. The structural, framework plantings are identified by name and specifically located on the plan.
The scope of work does not include detailed construction/scaled working drawings for any site structure or the actual construction or installation of the design. Services and advice are limited to planning and conceptual design of exterior spaces and horticultural consultation and do not include any engineering services, structural analysis, or construction details which may require the services of a licensed professional as required by law.
I am available to consult with you in your garden on plant selection and placement. I am available to procure plants, specifically selected for your garden, and provide assistance regarding their specific placement in your garden. Almost all of the client gardens you will see on my site were laid out in this manner after the development and implementation of a conceptual garden plan. This is also an excellent solution for those needing help with smaller areas or rejuvenating an existing planting.
This is the general process; although it can vary depending on the project and client needs and wishes:
For many projects, I truly believe that you get the “best of me” when we work this way. I have a knack for creating dynamic combinations which don’t always translate easily to paper.
Fully detailed, scaled planting plans with plant lists and profiles are available. The planting plan includes quantities and recommended size to purchase. Fees for planting plans vary based on the size and complexity of the project.
During peroids of elevated COVID19 spread in our community, I will adjust my availability for on-site, in-person consultations. When outbreaks are on the rise, the booking availability will be limited to online sessions. When in-person consults are available, I adhere to strict social distancing protocols and expect the same from anyone else involved in the session.
I live in close-in NE Portland and bill for drive time to garden locations that require travel time in excess of 15 minutes. Oftentimes, I will suggest that we start with an online session in order to discuss scope, goals, method, and budget. After which, onsite sessions can be booked on an as warranted basis. I have a two hour minimum for on-site consultations.
We'll meet virtually via telephone or videoconference. Available to gardeners outside of the Northwest. Please keep in mind my body of experience is heavily focused on the Northwest. General design principals are pretty universal and not overly dependent upon where you live. However, determining suitability of plants for any particular area relies on strong regional knowledge.Book Now
