Heucherella 'Stoplight'

Foamy Bells

xHeucherella 'Stoplight'

Semi-evergreen Perennial

The name is accurate. Leaves open in spring with a chartreuse to yellow-green base and a burgundy-red center blotch that bleeds along the veins—high contrast, readable from a distance, useful at the front of a border or repeated through a shade planting as a bright note.

×Heucherella hybrids split the difference between Heuchera and Tiarella: broader foliage color range than foamflower, better shade tolerance than most coral bells. 'Stoplight' lands at the yellow end of the spectrum, which makes it one of the more practical choices for lifting a dark corner without resorting to variegated foliage.

Compact—6 to 12 inches tall, a bit wider—with a rounded mound that holds its shape through the season. White panicles appear in spring. The foliage colors stay truer in open or bright indirect shade; deep shade mellows the yellow, full sun will stress it. Semi-evergreen in Zone 8b/9a; cut back the oldest leaves in early spring before new growth emerges. Divide every few years to keep it vigorous.
