Woodland Garden Anchored by Edgeworthia

The planting combination is from a client’s garden. It is anchored by Edgeworthia chrysantha, shown here in early summer. Though prized for its fragrant winter flowers, it holds its own in the foliage department; large blue-ish green leaves of the edgworthia are attractive; elevated above a tapestry of handsome foliage that carpets the ground. On the ground plane, Carex 'Everest's' light variegation brings light to the shady floor and is offset by the dark purple tones of Heuchera 'Amethyst Myst'. The silvery blue tones of Fatsia japonica 'Spider's Web' and Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Iceberg' lighten and brighten the scene further still. A duo of ferns, Tassel Fern and the Himalayan maidenhair, look great nearly year-round, but are especially fresh in spring and early summer. This combination looks great year-round thanks to its reliance on foliage, making it a good solution for adding curb appeal to a front entry garden. The fragrant blooms in late winter offer a seasonal boost when we need it most. Maintenance is straightforward and easy to accomplish: in late winter/early spring, cut the ferns down their crowns to make way for fresh foliage and deadhead the Heuchera after bloom to tidy up.
