It's a busy time of year and there's plenty of work that keeps me tied to my computer in the studio, so getting out and about to the retail nurseries, wholesale growers, and other peoples' gardens is an enjoyable must-do. Keeping my fingers on the pulse of what's looking good and keeping my eyes peeled for new plants to add to my repertoire is important—and fun, too! ..

I love flowers as much as the next gardener—I find the riot of spring blooms pure delight. But I’m a greedy gardener and I want more! At home, and in most of my client gardens, space is at a premium so I try to select plants that will provide enjoyment for multiple seasons—and the larger the plant, the more I expect. ..

In the video below, I demonstrate a process of first envisioning a planting concept based on shape, form, texture and color. After which I identify two different groups of plants for two different growing environments in order to recreate the visualized scene. ..

Small gardens seem to be the norm these days. And that means that planting space is at a premium. So when selecting plants for my garden and the gardens I make with my clients, I’m always on the lookout for plants that are attractive for multiple seasons. If they look good year-round, all the better! ..

Late summer, easing into fall, is hands-down my favorite time of year—a bit less going on and a tad more time to enjoy it. Vacations are winding down, school's back in session, and spending less time watering allows for more time enjoying the remnants of summer still on display in my garden. ..
