I love the shifting quality of autumnal light and the enchanting effect it brings to the garden as it readies for its winter sleep.
Here, the bold, backlit foliage of oakleaf hydrangea radiates warm copper tones that are echoed in the mahogany bark of the paperbark maple. Molinia caerulea ssp. caerulea 'Variegata' and Miscanthus 'Adagio', displaying tawny tones, the calling card of dormant grasses, are aglow lit from behind.
Though clearly a standout in fall, this garden vignette has been performing beautifully all summer long thanks to a palette of plants selected for their staying power and their ability to deliver easy-care, multi-season appeal over the long haul.
Shown above, the same garden scene in summer, though from a slightly different angle: Acer griseum in summer foliage (left edge), Geranium 'Rozanne' blooming her head off (lower left), a froth summer blooms on variegated purple moor grass (lower right), ivory panicles atop Hydrangea quercifolia 'Sike's Dwarf' (middle background) and not mentioned previously, but visible here is the evergreen shrub, Cephalotaxus harringtonia 'Duke Gardens' (back).
